A Retired Police Officer's Next Chapter Begins with a Power Chair

At Assist ME, our mission goes beyond providing equipment—we help people reconnect with the moments that matter. When a retired police officer reached out, we met someone who had spent years serving others and now faced challenges staying close to those he loves. His journey highlights that mobility is about more than movement; it’s about being able to join in, share experiences, and truly be present.

At just 62, living with a rare condition that gradually weakened his legs, this officer found himself unable to enjoy simple pleasures—especially time with his young grandson—after a lifetime of serving and protecting his community.

When his wife came to pick up the power chair, she told us he was over the moon with excitement. She said he’s been heartbroken watching life pass by from the sidelines — missing out on walks, games, and little moments that matter most. Now, with his new chair, he’s getting back to living those moments again. And when she got home, she said, “He’s smiling ear to ear.”

At Assist ME, this is why we do what we do. Because mobility isn’t just movement — it’s freedom, connection, and joy.

In fact, every mobility device we provide carries a story — and many don’t begin, or even end,  in easy places. But in every case, the impact of mobility is profound — not just for the recipient, but for the caregivers and loved ones who walk alongside them. Some stories also take a joyful turn. A surgery goes well. A recovery unfolds. A device that once felt permanent becomes temporary — and is returned so someone else can move forward too.

Have a story to share — joyful, difficult, or deeply personal?
