Assist ME Expands to Union County: Bringing Mobility Closer to Home

As mobility needs continues to grow across the region, Assist ME is preparing to establish a presence in Union County to better serve residents closer to home.  Our new location at Union Medical Plaza is under development with plans to open in a limited capacity in January 2027. 

Stay tuned for opening dates and hours of operation for equipment pickup and donations. 

This expansion would not be possible without the direct support and partnership of Atrium Health Union, Wingate University through Julia’s Learning Center, and the critical connections made through the Union County Chamber of Commerce. Assist ME has also received generous grant support from Union Power Cooperative Foundation and Foundation For The Carolinas through its Union County Community Fund.

Together, these partnerships help bring Assist ME’s mission of mobility and independence to more children and adults throughout Union County and the surrounding communities. 

Expanding Access to Mobility

For years, Assist ME has connected individuals with low incomes and little to no insurance (or Medicaid gaps) with free mobility and medical equipment, helping remove barriers that often stand between people, quality of life, dignity, and their independence.

Through donated wheelchairs, walkers, rollators, shower chairs, transfer equipment, and other mobility devices, Assist ME helps ensure that usable equipment finds a second life in the hands of someone who needs it. 

Building Capacity for the Future

Opening and sustaining a new location requires more than space. It requires people.

As a 99% volunteer-powered organization, Assist ME is seeking community support to help build the capacity necessary to serve Union County successfully. Financial contributions help fund critical operational needs, while volunteers help ensure donated equipment can move efficiently from one family to the next.

We are currently seeking:

• Volunteers in both Charlotte and Monroe
• Nonprofit board and committee members, including Junior Advisory Board members (age 13-17)
• Community ambassadors and outreach volunteers
• Equipment processing and distribution volunteers
• Student and retired physical therapists (PTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) to work daytime shifts of 3+ hours. 
• Medical referral partners (webinar training provided)

Looking Ahead

The Monroe location represents more than a new address. It represents greater access, shorter travel distances for families, stronger community partnerships, and more opportunities to provide life-changing mobility equipment to people throughout Union County and surrounding communities.
