Assist ME Founder & Executive Director, Jack Sheehan, recently made a pickup at
Mecklenburg County Compost Central. He loaded his SUV with wheelchairs, tub
transfer benches, and bariatric wheelchairs — all saved from the landfill thanks to a
partnership that began in April 2025 after an Earth Day TakeBack recycling event.
This ongoing collaboration diverts usable equipment into lifechanging resources for
uninsured and underinsured residents. Together, we are advancing both health equity
and environmental sustainability.
More Than a Donation
The SUV full of equipment is more than a donation — it is a reminder that community solutions can rise where systems fall short. As Jack explains, “Every wheelchair we rescue from the landfill is more than equipment — it’s a bridge to health equity. At Assist ME, we’re proving that dignity and mobility shouldn’t depend on income, but on community.” As healthcare costs rise and policy changes loom, Assist ME’s role as community infrastructure becomes more vital than ever.
Building Capacity Through Community
With the support of partners like Mecklenburg County Compost Central and donors across Charlotte, we can ensure that every neighbor has access to the mobility equipment that safeguards health, dignity, and independence.
