A Family’s Gift Strengthens Community Capacity

Recently, a father and daughter
brought medical mobility equipment to
Assist ME’s donation center at 1939
East Boulevard in Charlotte. Founder
& Executive Director Jack Sheehan
had the opportunity to learn about
their history in the community. For
years, they operated a small,
family run senior living residence in a
renovated home. But like many
boutique care providers, they were
forced to close when Medicaid reimbursements could no longer cover the true cost of long term care.

Rather than see valuable equipment discarded, they chose to donate it to Assist ME. Their generosity ensures that neighbors in Charlotte who cannot afford medically necessary mobility equipment will still have access to the devices that safeguard independence and bring dignity to those most vulnerable in our community.

As Jack reflected on their story, he shared: “As healthcare policy continues to shift, donations like these remind us that community capacity is built one act of generosity at a time. When families step forward, they help us weather the storm of change and
ensure our most vulnerable neighbors aren’t left behind.”

Medicaid & Boutique Care Homes

Medicaid is the primary payer for long term care in the U.S., but reimbursement rates often fall short of covering actual costs. Family run residences — sometimes called boutique senior living homes — struggle to survive under these financial pressures. Closures like the one experienced by this father daughter team are becoming more common, leaving vulnerable residents with fewer options for personalized care.

With healthcare policy changes expected in 2026 that may further reduce coverage options, the risk is clear: more seniors and people with disabilities will face gaps in care and access to essential equipment.

The Danger & the Gap

When small residences close, residents lose not only housing and care but also access to medical mobility equipment. Without intervention, individuals risk isolation, falls, and prolonged hospital stays. Assist ME steps in to fill this gap, ensuring that every donated wheelchair, bedside commode, or rollator is placed directly into the hands of those who need it most.

Community generosity is the foundation of health equity. Every donation — whether equipment, time, or financial support — strengthens Assist ME’s capacity to meet rising needs and safeguard dignity for our neighbors. Join us in building resilience: together, we can ensure mobility for all.
